Pradaxa Causing Bleeding Risk

Pradaxa, an anticoagulent (blood thinner) used during surgery as an agent to reduce the risk of stroke or blood clots, has been linked to an increased risk for extracranial gastrointestinal tract, myocardial infarction, stroke, and internal bleeding.  Sometimes, these conditions can be fatal.

Transvaginal Mesh

Transvaginal mesh is a surgical mesh implanted in women to aid with complications from pelvic organ prolapse (POP), urinary incontinence.  While this device has proven to be effective with some people, the FDA has warned of serious complications which may lead to further surgery including mesh erosion, infection, inflammation, mesh migration, and painful intercourse.  Johnson & Johnson, through  Ethicon, made and sold the Gynecare Prolift Anterior Pelvic Floor Repair System.  C.R. Bard manufactures and sells a similar product – Avaulta Plus BioSynthetic Support System.

In addition to vaginal meshes, Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon also manufacture and sell the Gynecare TVT Secur.  This system is made of a polypropylene mesh designed to treat meant to treat urinary incontinence.  Bard manufactures and sells something similar – the Align TO Trans-Obturator Urethral Support System.  These products are called slings or “bladder slings”.

While these products are meant to help reduce internal organs from “falling”, they can be quite dangerous as they can migrate, cutting through the vaginal wall, soft tissue, and other nearby structures causing an inability to urinate, inability to control urine output, and severe pain.
